Don’t Start From Looting
Most of us don’t consider looting to be a noble activity full of high aspirations. We look down on it as a damaging and destructive engagement, and condemn those who loot. We are astonished and abhor the rampant looting that California has been experiencing these past several weeks. We acknowledge the moral and societal reasons for our reactions, based on what we think is fair, right, and the rule of law.
The title of this article comes from Kendrick Lamar, a famous American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He tweeted a statement several years ago, addressing the Black community during a time of racial discord that generated a furious backlash: “What happened to [Michael Brown] should’ve never happened. Never. But when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us? It starts from within. Don’t start with just a rally, don’t start from looting – it starts from within.”
