Texas Republican Lawmakers Take Aim At Local Bail Practices This Legislative Session

Gov. Greg Abbott is banking on a version of reform that makes it harder for people accused of violent crimes to bond out, while ignoring Harris County-style efforts to ease the burden on indigent defendants.

In January, Gov. Greg Abbott paid tribute to State Trooper Damon Allen in his State of the State message, calling for the creation of “the Damon Allen Act.” Allen was killed in 2017 by a man out on bail for a felony offense.
